Position: SMC Stream Inventory Intern (1 position available)

Job Summary: Responsible for performing a standardized river and stream inventory
The Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) is seeking 1 intern to work in the Lake Michigan and North Branch of the Chicago River Watersheds in 2019. These candidates will spend time in the field and office under the guidance of SMC staff. The candidates will be responsible for performing a standardized detention basin inventory, the objective of which is to measure and assess current conditions, note maintenance and retrofit needs and opportunities to improve the water quality, flood mitigation and habitat functions of the basins.
Interns will work approximately 40 hours per week for up to 15 weeks. The desired start date is between April - May 15th. To be successful in this position, candidates must possess a high level of attention to detail to record data accurately. Successful candidates must also be highly motivated and able to work as a team unsupervised for long periods of time. The candidates will possess the ability to work both inside and outside in variable conditions and be willing to engage in limited to moderately strenuous physical activity. Microsoft Office software will be used to analyze the data and summarize findings into a final report.
We are looking for candidates who are a graduate of, or current student in, a 2- or 4-year higher education program with an emphasis on water resource engineering, environmental science, biology or a related field. Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software is highly desirable but not required. Applicants must have their own transportation for traveling to and from field sites. The candidate must have a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
