As an AbbVie Experiential Intern, you'll participate in a paid, ten to twelve-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. - Process Engineering (R452)
Process engineering provides robust solutions to chemical engineering problems facing the development and scale-up of API projects. The department specializes in fundamentals of chemical reaction engineering, isolation and separation technologies, and computational modeling. Assignment Details
The Center for Reaction Engineering (CRE) is a cross-functional team of organic and analytical chemists and chemical engineers who investigate fundamental aspects of chemical reactions and systems to increase the efficiency and robustness of reaction development and understanding. The CRE also develops new technologies and implements flow chemistry solutions to enable new synthetic routes.
Automation of equipment used in process development represents a new paradigm in the pharmaceutical industry. Processes must be developed quickly and understood as thoroughly as possible to ensure that quality pharmaceutical product is manufactured for clinical trials and bringing new drugs to market. Automation allows consistent acquisition of high-quality, reproducible data more frequently compared to manual methods and saves scientists considerable time by not having to perform repetitive tasks manually. The time saved allows scientists to focus on experimental design, data analysis, strategy, and other aspects of pharmaceutical development while automated equipment simultaneously executes data-rich experiments and accelerates process development. As processes mature, the need for increased process understanding is paramount to ensure robust scale-up. Many of these scale-up parameters, such as rates of heat and mass transfer, rates of reaction, and rates of mixing, among others, must be determined from laboratory data gleaned from many experiments conducted under similar conditions. The repetition involved in these types of experiments as well as the total number of experiments to perform means that manual execution is time-consuming and tedious. As a result, automation represents a significant, paradigm-shifting change in how these data are collected, saving scientists a considerable amount of time while allowing them to make decisions based on data-rich experiments.
The summer intern will demonstrate how an automated empty/fill reactor increases the efficiency of process development and simplifies the workflow of process development in a number of applications, such as reaction kinetics, liquid-liquid extraction, and identification of scale-up parameters relevant to manufacturing. The intern will use the automated system on business relevant cases (or reasonable models thereof) to show the increase in efficiency of data collection, analysis, throughput, and process understanding.
- Completed at least one year of graduate level education before beginning internship
- Must be enrolled in school the semester following your internship
- Ph.D. student in Chemical Engineering with 3+ years experience
- Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0/4.0
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated).
